ROAD safety is a top priority for Avon and Somerset police to tackle over the next two years.

Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens has put the issue at the head of the force’s ‘to-do’ list after it was recognised as one affecting many people.

The priorities are set out in Ms Mountstevens’ Police and Crime Plan, which has been relaunched this week.

She said: “It’s an issue which means different things to different people; for some it is drivers speeding near their homes and schools, for others it is people using mobile phones and sometimes it can be the potential for conflict between different road users. What is clear to me is that people want to feel safe on and near our roads and I believe it’s right that we should be clearly saying this is a priority for us.”

Key actions include supporting road safety partnership initiatives, such as Community SpeedWatch and road safety volunteers, ensuring high-quality road safety investigations and improving visible policing on the roads.

Other priorities in the plan include reducing the impact of antisocial behaviour, tackling domestic and sexual abuse, preventing and reducing burglary and ‘putting victims first’.
