FED-up residents in Nailsea say they are being kept as prisoners in their own homes because of roadworks in the east end of the High Street.Angry David Tipler, aged 51, of Heathgate says he and his disabled partner have been unable to get out of their development because the road has been closed off while the improvements are done.Mr Tipler says the work was only planned to take two days, but it has now run into over a week, causing chaos for residents and local businesses.Mr Tipler said: "It has been horrendous. The road has been closed and barriers have gone up which means we cannot get in or out of our home."The other day a lorry was stuck there for two hours."The workmen are still leaving the road closed off when they go home for the night, which means no one can get in or out."It has got beyond a joke and we are being kept as prisoners in our own homes."Traders said they had also received complaints from people trying to access the shops.John Brown, who owns Brown's Hardware said: "It has been difficult for our customers to get to and from the shop and we have seen a drop in trade because of this. The roadworks have been very inconvenient and we have had a few moans about it from customers."However, there is not much we can do but put up with it and be glad when it is finished."Nailsea Town Council chairman Marston Dufty said he was aware people had complained about the roadworks.Councillor Dufty said: " There have been some complaints about the roadworks."However, there will always be complaints when works such as these take place."The contractors have done their best to minimise disruption. The work will benefit everyone when it is completed."North Somerset Council spokesman Zoe Briffitt said: "We did say that the work would take a week to complete. The work is on schedule and we have done everything possible to minimise disruption while this important improvement work is carried out.
