ONE of Weston's tourist attractions is closing its doors for the last time due to a lack of trade. The Great Weston Train Experience in Clifton Road attracts model railway enthusiasts from all over the country, but owner Robin Stanbury says that visitor numbers have hit rock bottom and he has no choice but to close. The exhibition, which he saved from the Tropicana when it was closed down, features European and British model railway displays and Mr Stanbury put more than £50,000 into improving and restoring it.He said: "Unfortunately due to a lack of tourists we're closing it. We used to attract people from all over the world, there are a lot of collectors around. But we're in our 11th year and we've just seen numbers falling. It's just got worse and worse."It's just something else that Weston is losing due to a lack of support and lack of tourism. I invested a lot of money into it over the years and I've lost a lot of money."Mr Stanbury also runs Model Masters, a shop which specialises in European and British parts for model railways. The Great Weston Train Experience was on display in a room next to the shop and enthusiasts and tourists could pop in and view the impressive tracks. Mr Stanbury broke up the model railyways for the last time on August 25 and will be selling off the parts in his shop.
