Rubbish recycling service

A NORTH Somerset councillor is demanding Biffa cleans up its act or he will have the recycling firm struck off the council's approved contractors list.Councillor Peter Bryant is threatening to take drastic action if Biffa employees continue to leave recycling boxes and waste strewn over the pavements after collections, causing hazards for pedestrians.Cllr Bryant says over the past 18 months he has observed boxes being thrown around in Clifton Road, Langport Road and Clevedon Road and claims other residents have complained to him about it as well.He said: "Without exception the bins are thrown down on the pavement landing on any one of the six faces and proving a hazard to pedestrians."They look untidy and they are dangerous. I think people accept the fact the work's done by a local authority and they don't expect much more, it's sad. I want to change that. I don't think it's too much to ask from Biffa."Cllr Bryant has written to Biffa demanding its operatives begin placing the boxes back against the walls of properties and emptying waste correctly. He said: "Should no action be taken I will do my utmost to see that Biffa is removed from the North Somerset Council approved contractors list and will inform the other unitary authorities in our area that are hoping to form a waste partnership next year."But Biffa spokesman, Barry Walton, said: "We take great pride in the service we provide North Somerset and are surprised at these allegations. In the past six months we've delivered a recycling collection service to 1.1million homes contributing towards a recycling rate of 32 per cent. In this time we've received just a handful of complaints related to incorrect return of boxes."Any complaint we receive is taken very seriously and we look into each and every one. We would encourage anyone that has an issue with our service to contact the local authority so the matter can be investigated.
