YATTON Rugby Club has refused to comment on rumours it may leave its current ground off North End.

The sports team has a popular following in the village, but a large number of would-be housing developers eyeing up potential sites across Yatton has prompted speculation about whether the rugby club could be ready to move on.

Persimmon Homes is planning to build 83 houses off Moor Road on the Grange Orchard and the land the rugby club currently uses for training.

A planning application is expected to be submitted to North Somerset Council in the coming weeks, although No Moor Development campaign group is leading the opposition to housing in that part of Yatton.

But when asked if the rugby club would consider moving its ground, either in the short-term or long-term, club secretary Tony Watkins said: “We are not in a position to add anything to what has already been discussed during the various Yatton resident public meetings which have been held over the last few weeks.”

However it is no longer thought that a site on Mendip Road which has long been earmarked for a new burial site is under threat of housing.
