MINDLESS vandals have caused outrage by destroying a world-class sand sculpture on Weston seafront.Sand carvers from Holland travelled to the town to create the King Kong masterpiece using sand from Weston beach. But five days of work by members of the World Sand Sculpting Academy was kicked to pieces by vandals on the night of August 8.Sponsored by the Grand Pier, Weston Town Council, Towens and Wookey Hole, the project cost £9,000 and attracted visitors from all over.Council chiefs had hoped to make the sculptures a regular sight on Weston's seafront but have doubts that will happen now.North Somerset Council's leader Councillor Alan Hockridge said: "This was an act of mindless vandalism and we would urge anyone who saw the incident, or has any information, to contact the police."The sand sculpture had been extremely popular and had brought great enjoyment to residents and visitors to the town. If the sand sculptors do return to Weston next year, we will need to increase security after this thoughtless and stupid act."Police are investigating the incident and looking through CCTV footage.
