EARLY morning work on Weston beach is stopping holidaymakers getting a decent night's sleep, according to one resident.Dave Perry lives near the Grand Atlantic Hotel in Beach Road and says he is being woken up every morning at 6am by workers digging up sand on the beach.Every year North Somerset Council has to move the sand from the south to the north of the beach to stop it being washed away by the tides, a process known as 'longshore drift'.But Mr Perry says he cannot understand why the work has to be done so early and believes it is spoiling tourists' holidays, especially those staying in the Grand Atlantic and other nearby hotels. He said: "They say they have to do the work before the crowds hit the beach but they are still there at 11am when people are there."I cannot understand why they cannot do it after 7pm - maybe they don't want to work late."I can't imagine it endears any of the holidaymakers to Weston."North Somerset Councillor John Crockford-Hawley said: "Every year we have to move the sand from the south near the Grand Atlantic to near Knightstone Island."At this time of year we simply cannot afford to disturb tourists in the daytime and it is not possible to do it later because of the tides."This is a legitimate seafront activity that takes place every year.
