Santa’s Grotto will open earlier for children and young people with autism, starting from this weekend.

Weston’s Grand Pier has teamed up the with National Autistic Society to open its attraction, which starts this Saturday at 11am.

The pier is inviting families of children with autism to visit early from 10am every Sunday until the event finishes at the end of next month.

Event co-ordinator at the pier, Lorna Withington, hopes the initiative proves a success.

She said: “We know autistic children can sometimes be overwhelmed by the vibrant sights and sounds of the pier, but we did not want them to miss out on an opportunity to meet Santa.

“We will be reducing the volume of our background music, and ensuring we keep any tannoy announcements to an absolute minimum.”

Admission is £6 for children and two adults, which includes a gift from Father Christmas.
