TRUCK drivers using satellite navigation systems to find their way round Nailsea are flouting weight limits on town roads.Drivers trying to get to the West End Trading Estate often face having to do a U-turn in the road after trying to get down narrow and traffic clogged Silver Street - despite a weight limit of 7.5 tonnes being in force. The constant flouting of the weight limit has angered local councillors who are now looking at ways to stop lorries using restricted roads.Nailsea Town Council clerk Ian Morrell said: "We are seeing incidents of large lorries trying to get down Silver Street on a daily basis."The drivers are following their satellite navigation system and ignoring the road signs."Obviously when drivers type in West End Trading Estate it takes them on the shortest route and this is through the lanes."Often we see lorries having to do very difficult manoeuvres and reverse back up Silver Street when they realise it is impossible for them to drive down there."Mr Morrell said he is now seeking advice from the police on what road signs should be installed to make it clear a weight limit exists. He also wants to investigate what data is used for satellite navigation and whether it could be adapted to include details of weight restrictions. He added: "The satellite navigation system does not take into consideration weight limits, just the best route." A much better way to reach the trading estate would to be to go along Queens Road.
