A DERELICT Portishead primary school, which became a target for vandals and yobs, has been demolished.Contractors have been brought in over the past month to knock down the former Portishead Primary School at Slade Road and reduce it to a pile of rubble. The site is owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who bought it from North Somerset Council earlier this year for a rumoured £1 million. The Mormon group plans to turn the site into a state of the art centre for worship. But following problems with vandalism at the boarded up site during the summer months, the church decided to knock down the building.Church spokesman David Fewster said: "We bought the school earlier this year and the building was in a bad condition."During the summer we have had a significant number of problems with youths vandalising an already dilapidated building."We had reports of them climbing on the roof and throwing the tiles."As a result the church decided to go ahead with demolishing the building as a housekeeping exercise in a bid to keep it clean and free from youths."Mr Fewster said currently there were no plans in the pipeline to redevelop the building. He added: "There are no plans currently in place to submit a planning application and I would anticipate it will be another six to 12 months before plans for a church building on the site go before the local authority."Pupils from the school moved from the run down Victorian building to a purpose built new school at Harbour Road in 2003.The fight to buy the former school was a hotly contested battle, with community groups and a local health clinic all putting in bids.
