STUDENTS across North Somerset were celebrating this week after receiving their A level results.Pupils at Gordano School, Portishead, had more to celebrate than most, with a 100 per cent pass rate with more A grades than ever before.Seventeen students achieved either three or four A grades, with three students gaining places at Oxford or Cambridge.Among the star performers were Kate Houston, Stephanie Tang and Jack Townsend who gained four A grades at A level plus one A grade at AS level.Rosie Eastoe gained four A grades at A level plus a B at AS and Emma Murray, head girl, and Scott Wallberg gained four straight A grades at A level.Three candidates scored one of the top five marks nationally - Rosie Eastoe for media, Katherine Midgley for art and Tim King for art.Headteacher Graham Silverthorne said: "This is another outstanding year for our students."For a comprehensive school to attain a pass rate of 100 per cent is quite remarkable.At Nailsea School there were also celebrations as its pass rate rose from 95.4 per cent last year to 99.1 per cent in 2006.The school which made the biggest improvement was St Katherine's at Pill which saw its pass rate leap from 85.5 per cent to 98.4 per cent.At Backwell, top student was Sarah Brown who received five straight A grades.But the school as a whole saw its pass rate drop slightly from 98.7 to 97.59.At Clevedon Community School, students saw their pass rate jump from 93 per cent last year to 95 per cent this year.The overall pass rate for North Somerset was 97.5 per cent, with the pass rate for A-C grades at 72..4 per cent.
