A PORTISHEAD school has launched a link project with China.

Stefan Chilcott, head of creative arts at Gordano School travelled to Jinan, a city 200km south of Beijing, at the end of last year to initiate the project.

The partnership is with Jinan Foreign Language School, which has 8,000 pupils across four separate schools.

The Portishead teacher visited three of the schools, taking part in and sometimes leading classes where students worked on traditional English and Chinese legends and shared their thoughts and opinions on the UK.

He also took part in the daily exercise and said seeing up to 3,000 students exercising at the same time was a new experience for him.

Mr Chilcott said "It was an amazing experience, very different to schools in the UK, but the school, despite its size, made me feel very welcome and an honoured guest.

"I am really looking forward to seeing how we can move the project forward."

Mr Chilcott will be using the work that was created during his time in the school to start off the same activities with students at Gordano and partner primary schools. Planning is already under way for the next visit, which will hopefully also include students.
