STUDENTS at Backwell School had to be sent home from class for the second time in weeks after tiles blew off the roof in high winds.Pupils were sent home on Thursday after a large number of roof tiles blew off the newly built teaching block. This is the second time in the last six weeks that the 1,600 pupil school has been forced to close after the tiles, which form a multi coloured canopy around the building, have come off.It is understood school bosses have now asked for the whole canopy to be removed until further notice to prevent any further disruption.Students at the school say they are concerned for their safety and want the roof fixed once and for all so classes are no longer disrupted. One student, who did not want to be named, said: "We were sent home about a month ago because of the same thing happening."They put up netting to keep the tiles in place, but during the high winds, they just came down again."The teachers were walking around school wearing hard hats because of the danger of the flying tiles."As students were are concerned because it has happened before and we would have thought the first time it happened work would have been carried out to stop it occurring again."A parents' evening was cancelled because of the falling tiles and football training had to be postponed.North Somerset Council spokesman Steve Makin said: "The school was closed on Thursday as some of the polycarbon tiles were blown off the roof during exceptionally high winds. "These have now been made safe and we are working to ensure that this does not happen again. "The safety of students and staff is our paramount concern.
