School speed limit zone vetoed amid cost fears

A 20MPH speed limit will not be implemented around a primary school, because North Somerset Council has told villagers it cannot foot the bill.
Residents living next to the primary school in Westfield Road, Banwell, have been campaigning to get the speed limit of their road reduced due to the large number of children crossing.
North Somerset Council said it will only allow the 20mph zone to be created if Banwell Parish Council contributes to the cost of investigating the scheme and if it pays for the alterations.
To install traffic calming measures, such as humps or chicanes, it would cost the village up to £20,000 plus surveys and investigatory work.
The parish council says it is unable to fund this work at the moment but promised to look into other means of controlling traffic in the area.
