Scout HQ sold

A SCOUT group in Hutton has sold off its base after the landowners refused to extend the site lease.

Hutton Parish Council terminated the lease for the site off St Marys Road before buying the hut for an undisclosed sum last month.

Before the decision, councillors had openly said they were unhappy at how the wooden building was managed and its lack of availability to community groups. It followed a rift between the Axe District Scout and Guides group and
Little Owls preschool, which also uses the facility. The dispute was reportedly over equipment being left out after school hours.

Parish clerk Steve Cope said: “The parish council was not happy at the way the building was being run and decided to end the lease.

“The council has taken over the hut and will ensure all groups will continue to be able to use the site.

“We are also looking to invite other groups to hire the rooms.”

The parish council set up the 28-year lease of the scout hut site in 1982, extending it by a further year in 2010.

Two years ago the hut fell into disrepair and was refurbished thanks to money from a lottery grant, the parish council and Little Owls.
