THE International Helidays Plus event in Weston is celebrating 100 years of the helicopter this summer.The four day event, hailed as the biggest public helicopter show in Europe, kicks off on July 26 at midday with the famous Red Arrows formation display team performing over Weston Bay.They will be followed during the afternoon by a series of other flying displays, including a Battle of Britain Flight Spitfire, Royal Air Force fast jet displays, the Royal Navy Historic Flight and Black Cats Lynx Helicopter Display Team, the RAF Falcons Parachute Display Team and a Belgian Sea King search and rescue demonstration. The Belgian helicopter will also mark the beginning of a number of arrivals for the Beach Lawns static park, which this year will boast two Sikorsky HH-3 F 'Jolly Green Giant' combat search and rescue helicopters from the Italian Air Force, a Sea King and Lynx from the German Navy, a Royal Air Force Puma and a mix of other military and civil helicopters from all over the UK and Europe.There will also be children's rides, an art and craft fair, a flight simulator and a variety of other stalls and attractions, including a weekend military vehicle display. International HeliDays Plus is organised and run almost wholly by volunteers, with the aim of raising money for local charities and is supported by North Somerset Council and Weston Town Council.Admission will cost £2 per adult and £1 for children.
