BURNHAM'S seafront is set to look completely different if a proposal to build 14 flats is given the go-ahead. A planning application has been submitted to Sedgemoor District Council by Moose Roper Limited to build a three-storey building with 14 flats and car parking facilities at a site in Allandale Road. The existing house and garage will be knocked down to make way for the new buildings. Moose Roper, which is based in Radstock near Bath, hopes to build two bedroom apartments on the land, which overlooks the beach. The development is set to be an eco-friendly building and planners have made sure that the proposal fits new Government guidelines regarding new structures. Solar panels will be fitted to provide up to 50 per cent of the hot water. Every flat will also be fitted with its own water meter. Similar planning applications for apartments in the area have been met with concern by residents, who argue that Burnham and Highbridge need family homes rather than flats. In May this year, a controversial planning application to build flats in Queen's Square in Highbridge was refused after residents said the area was being over-developed. But in the latest planning application, the developer argues: "The apartments will be a stunning addition to the seafront and will provide a landmark building to denote the relationship of the site to the seafront and to mark the outer edge of the town before it changes character to a dune environment.
