Search for options to street café 'problem'

PLANS to revoke outdoor seating licences in Weston have not been ruled out.

The Mercury revealed last month how traders could be forced to keep their tables indoors all-year-round.

North Somerset Council executive member for highways, Elfan Ap Rees, says the drastic measure could be taken along Regent Street, from Big Lamp Corner to the Grand Pier, because high visitor numbers, combined with outdoor
seating, is causing problems for pedestrians.

Councillor Ap Rees said this week that the suggestion to revoke licences has not been ruled out, but that he is looking to see what other options there are.

He said: “I am watching the situation carefully. Businesses have not been asked to take their outdoor seating in at this stage, but discussions are ongoing.”

Street café licences can be revoked at any time if it is
considered ‘reasonable’ to do so.
