Dozens of rare birds have been cared for by an East Huntspill animal charity during the cold snap.

Secret World Wildlife Rescue, in New Road, has saved species including lapwings, plovers and woodcocks during the freezing temperatures.

Many of the animals were at risk of starvation and suffering injuries.

Despite the inclement weather, Secret World staff and volunteers trekked through snow drifts to reach animals in need.

Secret World animal carer Dan Bryant said: “It is always sad to see these beautiful birds suffering from the cold but the chance to care for more animals makes all our work worthwhile.

“Unique conditions such as at the start of the month do increase the cost of running the centre, so any donations towards the rescue and care of wildlife are always gratefully received.”
