Staff at an IKEA branch more than 100 miles away have donated some of the store's iconic blue sacks to a Somerset wildlife charity to help save injured swans.

Secret World Wildlife Rescue Centre in East Huntspill put out a social media appeal for IKEA’s blue bags, as it uses them to transport swans during rescue and release operations.

The Facebook post was shared hundreds of times and staff at IKEA in Reading spotted it.

Their donation was accompanied by a note which said they were ‘excited’ to see the bags helping wildlife, and added the bags had also been re-used as improvised dog ponchos, fashion accessories and exercise tools.

Secret World chief executive David Foulds said: “We were delighted to receive this donation from IKEA.

“I would like to personally thank IKEA for its generosity, as well as the individuals who responded to our appeal and donated their own bags for the cause.”
