A green woodpecker which got caught on a glue fly trap has been rescued.

Secret World Wildlife Rescue came to the rescue of the sticky bird after it got caught in fly papers.

It was taken to the charity’s East Huntspill centre and was given a thorough wash to remove all the glue.

Volunteers then led a final test flight with the bird before it was given the green light to be released.

Release manager at Secret World, Jamie Kingscott, said: “Green woodpeckers are susceptible to stress.

“They do not like being in captivity so being able to release it the same day as its sticky ordeal was a great relief.

“The World Cup may not be coming home but this woodpecker certainly did.”

The bird was taken back to where it was found and successful released within a day of the rescue.
