THE owners of Weston's only sex shop want a licence to sell hard-core pornographic videos to customers.Joy Adult Shop, in Whitecross Road, has applied for a Sex Shop Establishment Licence from North Somerset Council. The shop's owners can already sell saucy goods without a licence as long as adult products make up less than 20 per cent of its stock. If granted, the new licence would enable category Restricted 18 (R18) videos to be sold. The films contain sex scenes and are only available in licensed cinemas and sex shops.Weston Town Council's planning committee was consulted on the licence application and unanimously objected to it in a meeting this week.Councillor Ian Parker was among a handful of councillors who spoke against the application. He said: "I think it is quite unsuitable for a sex shop to be in the middle of a residential area. For it to want to have a licence to sell hard-core pornography I feel is a step too far."North Somerset Council has so far received 13 letters of objection, mainly from people concerned about the location of the shop, which they say is in a family residential area. The Weston & Somerset Mercury spoke to Joy's owner, who did not want to be named, but said: "I've been here for 10 years without any valid criticism or complaint from the authorities. I don't see how selling videos will affect anyone. The inside of the shop is obscured from view."Joy has applied and failed to get a sex shop licence on two previous occasions.
