CLEVEDON'S long running jazz club is to fold - because of a lack of audience support.Managers of the club, which has been running for 16 years, took the decision to suspend its activities because the organised music nights are no longer viable.Club bosses have seen audience figures at its twice-monthly gigs - held at the Walton Park Hotel - plummet, sometimes only selling 30 tickets. At its peak, the club had 180 members and attracted scores of visitors to its band nights. But now membership has dwindled to just 84, with audience numbers also falling. The news will mean there will be no Long Weekend - a musical highlight of the year which used to attract hundreds of jazz lovers from across the country - in 2006.Clevedon Jazz Club joint manager Trevor Tomasin said: "It was a tough decision to make."With its present lack of audience support, the club is suffering severe cash flow problems and in order to avoid further financial loss, the club has been forced to take this action now."The club's future requires a radical rethink and its activities will remain suspended for the foreseeable future."Traditional jazz appears to have dwindling support in Clevedon and younger people are not taking an interest in this type of music."There are obviously costs involved with booking bands and hiring the venue and we have lost money on a number of gigs."It is a very sad day, but we have been going for 16 years and everything comes to an end. "I am very grateful to all the people of Clevedon for the support they have given us over the years."The club will fulfil its May programme of events and there will be a final concert at the Walton Park Hotel on May 25 when jazz favourites Crusty's All Sorts will take to the stage. For more information, contact Trev or Bill on 0700 5806252.
