COMMUNITY safety chiefs in Portishead are to suggest a review of speed limits through the town - to make the area safer for cyclists.Portishead Local Action Team chairman Geraldine Box says she wants to conduct a survey of the speed limits through Portishead and see if any need reducing. The move follows concern about the safety of cyclists, especially the scores of students who bike to class at Gordano School each day.Portishead Local Action Team chairman Geraldine Box said: "I noticed the other day when driving along out of Portishead and through North Weston how very fast some cars were travelling."This route is used a lot by children who cycle to Gordano School and some of the cars were going so fast around the corner without thinking what may be on the other side."At a time when the Government is looking at ways to increase more environmentally friendly ways of travelling, the safety of cyclists should be looked at."I am going to suggest to the local action team that we carry out a survey of the speed limits on the roads of Portishead and assess whether they are suitable for the area."We can then present our findings to the police and North Somerset Council if we feel they need to change."Gordano School business manager Paul Maines said students were encouraged to find alternative ways to cars to travel to school.Mr Maines said: "Currently we have around 60 students who cycle to school."Currently we have a 40-rack cycle facility and plan as part of our development to increase this capacity. "I have had no complaints from our cyclists, but the road outside the school has always been busy as it acts as an alternative route to the motorway."It is a situation we will continue to monitor."Any measures that are taken to reduce speed outside the school and improve safety for students is something we would support."Portishead police community sergeant Terry Scoble said: "We have received no complaints about speeding in Portishead or North Weston."What needs to be done is a traffic survey in conjunction with North Somerset Council to fully understand the problem."Anyone caught breaking the speed limit risk a fine and penalty points.
