Snow dome heading for Weston

A MULTI-MILLION pound snow dome, ice rink and indoor leisure complex is set to be built on the outskirts of Weston within two years.
Leisuredome UK Ltd is about to sign contracts with Persimmon to buy a piece of land for the exciting development on the former airport site.
Proposals for the 21,400sqm complex, set to be the first indoor snow centre in the South West, could bring up to an estimated three million extra visitors to the area each year.
Negotiations between the company and landowners Persimmon for the Weston Airfield development, also set to include a luxury health spa and gym, large retail area, freefall activities, conference and meeting rooms and a skateboard park, are in advanced stages.
The site, set to be the largest indoor ski centre and health spa complex combination in the country, would be called The Leisuredome and would use real snow to give visitors what developers call ‘an authentic Alpine experience’.
The 180m ski slope and the other exciting facilities could be open by late summer 2012 if contracts are signed and planning permission gets the green light next year.
North Somerset Council leader, Councillor Nigel Ashton, said: “This is hugely exciting for Weston.
“It is terrific that things are starting to come together.
“Skiers will come from all over the South West to use the site and this adds to the appeal of the town.”
Leisuredome UK Ltd got inspiration from other similar, popular facilities in Glasgow, Castleford, Manchester, Tamworth, Milton Keynes and Hemel Hampstead, which have up to six million visitors a year each.
They also looked at other potential sites in Weston, including land near the former ‘tip’ near Blockbuster, before settling on the airfield, which has boundaries at Winterstoke Road and Somerset Avenue.
A public consultation on the proposals is likely to be carried out early next year if contracts are signed, with planning applications set to be submitted by next summer.
