A COUNCILLOR has said taxpayers are getting 'value for money' after Somerset County Council's finances were rated highly by an independent group.

The Independent Audit Commission said the body’s financial statements for 2010/11 were in good order and offering value for money.

Councillor David Huxtable, cabinet member for resources, said: “The audit found that the authority has an ‘objective, knowledgeable and effective’ audit committee helping to provide strong governance, and that, ‘robust financial monitoring arrangements’ have been put in place to ensure the budget is delivered.

“Providing value for money to Somerset residents and taxpayers is one of our key priorities, and this recognition is a vital part of demonstrating that aim.

“It will put us in a strong position to tackle the many challenges going forward.”
