The future of 24 children’s centres will be decided on Monday.

Somerset County Council will consider whether to move forward with its draft plans to merge children’s centres and create eight ‘family centres’ apposed to the current 24.

The authority says in its draft document the centres will be open in the areas of the ‘greatest need’, one of which is Highbridge.

The move will help the council to cut costs and to redesign how it offers its services.

If successful, the remaining 16 buildings will have their children’s centre designation removed but continuing to offer early childhood services including education and nursery places.

The council has also looked at moving some of the facilities to community venues, like village halls and schools.
