TEN foster carers are needed to look after children with special needs North Somerset Council has revealed.

A new scheme aims to provide a pool of carers to help house children and teenagers who have additional needs, need emergency placements or are at risk of offending.

Councillor Jeremy Blatchford, executive member for children’s services, said the new project would help give carers ‘skills to specifically foster young people with the most challenging behaviour’.

He said: “By offering specialist placements we will be able to tailor our support for the needs of each young person, ensuring that they receive the highest quality of care while also enabling them to stay closer to their family and friends.”

Foster carers who are approved for the scheme will receive 24-hour support including two weeks paid ‘respite breaks’ per year.

Other benefits and financial assistance includes free access to North Somerset leisure facilities and a payment of £420 per week for each young person fostered.
