With tens of thousands of people expected to flock to Weston-super-Mare’s seafront this weekend for the air festival and Armed Forces weekend, we looked back at some of our readers’ best pictures from years gone by.

The weekend has created a number of brilliant photographic opportunities over the years, from the spectacular stunts in the air to the mind-boggling displays in the arena on the Beach Lawns.

Steve Taplin captured a fantastic photo of the RAF Typhoon – which will return to the festival this year – as it soared over Weston last year.

The Red Arrows have been the biggest and most photographed attraction at the festival for a number of years, with picture after picture of the performance group’s sleek formation being sent to the Mercury.

Frank Matthews snapped a number of pictures of the group’s aerial display in 2016.

Clive Furbank also got up close and personal with one of the aerial displays, using his camera to photograph the smallest details.
