STAFF and customers at a bar in Burnham got into the celebratory mood for St George's Day last week.

The last night of the proms even featured at the Royal Clarence Hotel on the Esplanade, which was decorated in red and white last Wednesday.

A selection of English ales and ciders were on tap for the occasion, and a St George-themed quiz saw some lucky contestants take home prizes.

Hotel owner Paul Chatwin said: “It was very well received, but perhaps not quite as busy as we would have liked. We wanted to do it to raise the interest in St George’s Day because a lot of people complain it doesn’t get celebrated enough.

“We’re hoping it is something that we can enjoy and be proud of, and we raised around £100 for the coastguard too. It’s definitely something we are going to do again next year.

“We didn’t make any money for ourselves on the day but we have to try these things and have a bit of national pride. We certainly had some new faces in and hope to see them again.”
