Street could be closed for children to play

A WESTON street could be closed to allow children to play freely and safely.

Rachel Ling is consulting with parents and residents about using Stafford Road under the Playing Out initiative and will apply to North Somerset Council if there is significant interest.

The project, currently being trialled across the district, encourages youngsters to go outside and get some fresh air rather than sitting inside watching television.

Byron Road in Locking was the first North Somerset street to take part in the scheme and was regarded by the organiser as a success.

Ms Ling said: “Not all children have access to a safe outside space in which to play with their friends and where I live there is not a green space that is local for them to play in.

“I have decided to consult with local parents and residents and then apply to North Somerset Council to have part of Stafford Road closed on a set day for a few times to see how it goes.”

The founders of the Playing Out project say streets should only be closed if the children are supervised and recommend there is one organiser, one helper and stewards on hand to guarantee the youngsters’ safety.

Anyone with any comments about the proposal should contact Rachel Ling on 07976 204535.
