SOMERSET County Council has been given £500,000 to switch off or reduce lighting in select locations to cut carbon emissions.

The funding has come from the South West Regional Improvement & Efficiency Partnership, and lighting will be reduced from midnight until 5.30am when there is less traffic on the roads.

The council is not revealing which locations have been chosen but say the effects of the scheme will be monitored over two years and if there is a negative impact full-time lighting may be reinstalled.
