Streetlife users have shared their views online after North Somerset Council announced it is considering changes to the layout of the roads in Weston town centre.

The plans – which are currently being considered – include a public transport ‘hub’ for Alexandra Parade and a tree-lined boulevard along Station Road, Walliscote Grove Road and Carlton Street.

This boulevard would connect the town centre to the seafront and Regent Street could become pedestrianised.

Users have reacted to the news, with many saying the town centre needs to be improved before these changes occur.

Debbie Cannon commented: “The only way to bring new business to our rapidly deteriorating town is to actively promote it.

“You can’t make it look pretty, put on a few more buses and expect business to be banging on the door of the council office.”

Wendy Beacham echoed this view and said: “The town centre is grotty and definitely needs attention.

“With thousands of new homes being built on the old airfield, I am scared for the town.”

The changes are still only being discussed and a spokesman for the council said: “The council is in the early stages of developing a movement strategy to support the regeneration of Weston town centre.

“No decisions have yet been made on any of the proposals.

“The strategy is intended to make it easier for people to find their way around the town centre, whether travelling on foot, by bike, public transport or by car.”

However, one user said the proposed changes would not alter his view of the town centre.

Howard Fisher said: “I already avoid the town centre if at all possible and I don’t think these proposed changes will alter that.”

Rachel Sandy said she could see the benefits to the town’s businesses through this kind of development.

She said: “I’m not suggesting it is a bad idea but the links need to be made through a master plan and think about economic growth.

“The town centre, with the housing proposals and education expansion, is becoming less of a business and retail hub everyday.”

Nicola Sanders said: “I live in Weston and go into the town centre once a month as there is nothing much to go in for.

“The shops have gone downhill over time – it is such a shame.”
