Weston’s Streetlife users reacted to the news that Weston town centre could get 900 homes designed to attract ‘high-end’ residents to the town, with much disapproval.

The Mercury revealed North Somerset Council wants the homes in a new ‘priority zone’, stretching from Weston Railway Station to the seafront.

The Government’s Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) is set to invest £20million in the project.

Caitlin Honeywell said: “High-end housing. what about ‘affordable’ housing?

“Maybe some thought for Westonians trying to get on the housing market.”

There were also concerns voiced about the extra traffic the potential residents may bring and adjustments which may need to be made.

Leslie Beaven said: “Houses will be bought by people commuting to Bristol and spending their money there.

“You will also need to sort out entry onto junction 21 and A370.”

However, one user saw the potential good side of welcoming new home-owners to the town.

Matt Deakin commented on a Mercury Facebook post and said: “You do realise people with money do actually bring money to an area?

“Yes they might commute to Bristol every day, but they are in an office for that whole day working.”

There are a number of sites also up for redevelopment, including Locking Road car park.

Jaz Whareham expressed her ‘sadness’ at the prospect and echoed the views of many Weston Streetlide users.

She said: “Sadly, the council does not see Weston as a holiday destination anymore, which is sad.”
