WESTON gave its widespread support to the junior doctors who have been involved in an ongoing pay dispute with the Government.

More strikes are planned for Tuesday and February 10, as junior doctors battle to receive improved wages and fairer working hours, though Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt called the strikes ‘wholly unnecessary’.

The doctors included those working at Weston’s General Hospital.

Streetlife users this week backed the strikes, with many offering their ‘100 per cent support’ to the young medics.

Starting the thread, Nick Page posted two pictures of Weston doctors taking part in the first 24-hour strike.

Arthur R then voiced strong opinions about the action.

He said: “I don’t blame them, (the doctors), they have my full support. The Government have in recent years ruined the nursing service, police service and fire service and are now trying to impose new contracts on junior doctors using spurious reasons.”

Mark C, Wendy B and Patricia K all pledged their support to the doctors, while Arthur B added: “Jeremy Hunt keeps saying that the Government has to introduce the changes because it is a manifesto commitment.

“As the Tory party issued the manifesto, they should be prepared to negotiate and pay the price to implement it.”

There was some support for David Cameron’s Government, however, with David Y saying the health system relies on hospitals working quickly and efficiently, which they must continue to do.

He commented: “I am not with either side on this one. The junior doctors have a good case but so does the Government.

“Patients are dying because our hospitals are only working properly on four-and-a-half days a week.”

Rock Star agreed the NHS could run more effectively.

He said: “I think all doctors and NHS staff do a wonderful job, but I think the NHS is in need of change.

“Too many managers and staff that are not really needed.

“People using the service who could have gone to a pharmacy. I don’t know what the answer is; maybe change the system to a health insurance.”

Pauleen P suggested the country needed more doctors and nurses.

She said: “Our population is exploding but we seem to have the same number of doctors and nurses. I think it should be there for us seven days a week.”
