THE Grand Pier in Weston is struggling to recruit specialist engineers to maintain its rides and machines.

Despite placing adverts, attraction owner Kerry Michael is still finding it hard to find people with the right experience.

Mr Michael said that previously the British Amusements, Catering and Trade Association ran courses with industry publication Coinslot to train people, but the programme was stopped and there are no new engineers coming through the system.

He said: “The lack of engineers is hampering companies as they battle to lead the way out of the recession.”

The Institution of Engineering and Technology says over the next year, 58 per cent of companies plan to recruit engineers and demand is outstripping supply.
