POLICING in the Cheddar area is set to be stepped up this summer when a team of support officers are drafted in.Four police community support officers are due to be deployed to Cheddar Police Station to tackle antisocial behaviour in the village, as well as in areas such as Shipham, Axbridge and Wedmore. The officers will have fewer powers than beat officers but will be able to clamp down on problems such as irresponsible drivers and residents dropping litter. It is hoped the increased presence on the streets will reduce the fear of crime in village areas. However, Cheddar police have not been able to secure any increased patrols during the World Cup next month, when it is anticipated there could be a rise in crime across the country.
