A PLANNING application to double the size of Clevedon's Tesco supermarket has been submitted. The food giant this week submitted plans to North Somerset Council to build a replacement 5,588 sq metre store at Kenn Road. The new store will have 602 parking spaces including dedicated disabled and parent and child spaces and will be of a modern design to make maximum use of natural light and latest technologies designed to minimise power and fuel use.Access to the new store will be from the existing roundabout at Kenn Road with the store being relocated from its current position to the other end of the existing site with the rear elevation backing onto Southern Way.The existing Labcaire and Bradshaw sites will form part of the Tesco site, both companies relocating to new premises in the local area should the plans get the green light. The existing store, which opened 11 years ago, will continue to trade while the new one is being built.Store bosses held displays and consultation days to ask people's views on the development plans.Tesco spokesman Felix Gummer said: "We held a three day display to explain our proposals to the public but the attendance and the number of comment forms returned was disappointingly low."We have also spoken to many members of the public and existing customers and they seem to be very enthusiastic about our proposals."We will of course, continue to maintain a dialogue with interested parties in the town during the period that the application is running."The plans for the new store include wider aisles, more tills and a greater range of stock. The new store will also have an in-store bakery and more fresh produce. Tesco's home shopping service - Tesco.com - will also be expanded with more delivery lorry bays.
