WATERSPORT enthusiasts say poles put up to protect Weston beach from boy racers are putting their lives in danger.Wind and kite surfers say when they are travelling across the sea they have no idea where the poles are when the tide covers them up, and fear someone could soon be seriously hurt by one.The poles were put up by North Somerset Council to stop troublesome boy racers driving around the beach.Wind-surfer James Llewelyn said: "I am a keen kite surfer and frequent Weston beach to kite on the water."Recently the council has placed poles along the mid water mark of the beach. There are also some yellow signs in the water that highlight the mud."These posts in the water contribute a major water hazard for those using the beach. The potential risk to windsurfers, kite surfers and other water users vastly outweighs their purpose in preventing some boy racers from getting their cars caught in the mud. "It is my fear that the new posts will cause some serious damage to anyone who hits them."In addition the yellow triangle signs are potentially lethal at high water as they are covered with water. Their razor sharp tips stick out and I have watched people performing tricks near to them without knowing they could be impaled on the spikes."North Somerset Council's ranger service manager Eric Dougall said: "As part of our risk assessment of the beach we have got to inform the public of the dangers of the beach."The signs are a requirement by law and it is something we cannot afford to avoid."The posts were put up because of the problem of boy racers using the beach."But we are going to move them back up the beach a bit, which should still stop the cars."Also, after meeting with the kite surfers we have decided to remove some of the posts.
