A swan which had a lucky escape after being hit by a train has been released back into the wild.

Secret World Wildlife Rescue in East Huntspill came to the rescue of Thomas earlier this month when he was found distressed on railway tracks.

Volunteer response driver Graeme Thompson eventually found Thomas in a nearby garden and, after taking him to the charity’s hospital, was found to have a carpal joint bruise and some minor wounds.

After a recovery period, Thomas was returned to an area near where he was found with two other swans.

Mr Thompson said: “As expected, they were pleased to get on to the water.

“However, what we didn’t expect was that they would swim straight across and climb out on the other side.

“Off they determinedly set along the further bank for a considerable distance before deciding that the water was a good idea after all.”

Secret World treated more than 70 swans in 2017.
