ANTIQUE lovers bidding to buy a Regency drum table were left open mouthed - after it sold for £200,000 at auction. The Regency rosewood and ormolu mounted drum table, which is understood to have been made by Regency cabinet maker John Mclean, went under the hammer at Clevedon Salerooms, with a price guide of £4-6,000.But after a bidding war, the piece eventually sold for a staggering £200,000.The table was consigned to the salerooms from the outskirts of Bristol and was similar to one sold a few months ago for £4,000.All available land and internet lines were booked days in advance of the sale by purchasers vying for the table. Auctioneer Marc Burridge started the bidding at £10,000.He said: "A number of bidders were prepared to go to £25,000 but once £30,000 was reached, just two bidders were left, neither apparently willing to concede defeat."As the £100,000 mark came and went you could have heard a pin drop"Onlookers, including a number of experienced dealers, who had hoped to be taking the table home with them, stood open mouthed as the price continued to rise to £200,000 before one of the telephone bidders could go no further."The successful purchaser was one of London's most respected antique furniture dealers.
