Appeal hearing into 'harmful' housing estate due to start

Taylor Wimpey will today (Tuesday) begin arguing why it should be allowed to build up to 60 homes in a North Somerset village.

It has launched an appeal to an independent housing inspector after its plan to build an estate in Stowey Road was refused by North Somerset Council.

The council rejected the scheme in August 2016 because it felt there was a chance Yatton could be ‘harmed’ by it.

In its decision notice, it said: “The proposed construction of up to 60 dwellings on land, which is located outside the established settlement boundary for the village of Yatton, represents a form of development that, with its ‘finger-like’ projection into the surrounding countryside, will be out of keeping with the rural landscape character and quality of the area and will result in harm to the rural setting and edge of village.”

The planned site is near Hangstones Pavilion.

The project has been opposed by campaign groups such as No Moor Development.

YACWAG nature group also opposed the ‘totally unacceptable’ development amid fears protected wildlife species could be affected.

Taylor Wimpey however says Yatton is a sustainable location for new homes and therefore its scheme should be approved.

The appeal is being held at Weston Town Hall.

Once finished, the inspector will go away and consider their decision before announcing it in the coming weeks or months.
