CHILDREN have launched a campaigning using Christmas cards to ask for more swimming pools in North Somerset. The youngsters have taken action because there are only five swimming pools left in the district, including Weston, and over 500 children are on waiting lists to have their first lessons. The petition will go to North Somerset Council asking to improve the swimming facilities available to children and schools. Parents are also backing the campaign.Churchill Sports Centre has been fully booked with swimming lessons because more and more pools are closing and the cards, which say 'All I want for Christmas is a swimming pool' have been coloured and signed by all the children.Swimming teacher Ruth Brozaitis runs her own swimming school and wants to see more improvements. She said: "So many people are cross that swimming for their children has stopped. We need more facilities because swimming is important to not only children but the parents."Headteachers from local schools are helping with the campaign and we hope North Somerset Council will take our petition seriously."A council spokesman said: "All our leisure facilities are very popular, attracting over 1.3 million visitors last year. There are some waiting lists for swimming lessons but there were over 250,000 swimming lessons offered last year when some of our centres put on additional sessions.
