Teen drinking focus

A SPECIAL leaflet detailing the dangers of underage drinking and the strategies in place to tackle it is being delivered to thousands of homes in Nailsea.The leaflet has been put together by the town's Local Action Team (LAT) with help from the police, community safety group, town council, schools and North Somerset Council and will be delivered to 7,000 homes.The idea of the leaflet followed concerns about the number of underage drinkers in Nailsea and the effects of their antisocial behaviour on the town.Teen drinking hot spots include Golden Valley Fields, the Scotch Horn Park and the precinct. Police have already carried out swoops of the areas and seized numerous bottles and cans of alcohol.Nailsea LAT chairman John Hunter said: "There has been a lot of concern about the levels of underage drinking in the town and the antisocial behaviour which it leads to."It affects our older society with many people in their 70s and 80s too frightened to venture out at night because of the young people out on the streets and in the parks."We now have alcohol exclusion orders and that, with police action, is going some way to tackling the problem."The leaflet tells parents of the strategies already in place to tackle the issues of teen boozing in the town.It also highlights the dangers and risks of underage drinking.Mr Hunter added: "The leaflet is focused at parents and is informing the community about the strategies which we are using to target issues such as these which affect the people of Nailsea."It also highlights the dangers of drinking and offers advice to parents and young people on how to deal with it."It details what the LAT and the community is doing to reduce antisocial behaviour in Nailsea."Mr Hunter is now looking for community organisations in the town to help deliver the leaflet.A donation for helping will be available to any group who comes forward.Anyone who wants to help can contact Mr Hunter on 01275 856142.
