SIX teenage tourists had to be rescued by a lifeboat after they wandered out into the dangerous mudflats on Weston beach. The coastguard was alerted after two 19-year-old holidaymakers were spotted struggling waist deep in the mud. They were about 45 minutes from becoming engulfed by the incoming tide. When the lifeboat went to save the pair, RNLI volunteers picked up four more teenagers who were trying to walk through the mud.The 19-year-olds, a man and a woman, were on holiday from Chippenham and said they were trying to cool off when they found themselves stuck in the mud.The four other teenagers included 18-year-old Rachael and 19-year-old Haddy, from Watford. They were staying in Shepton Mallet and were on a day trip.Rachael said: "We were trying to get to the sea to cool off and didn't realise how dangerous the mud was."The lifeboat volunteers were really good and we're so thankful they picked us up because it was beginning to get quite worrying."Between 30 and 40 sun-seekers had to be moved back from the mud and an ambulance and a fire engine were also called. The incident happened at about 2.30pm on Tuesday, July 25. Nobody was injured.
