POLICE in Portishead are to launch a zero tolerance approach to tearaway teens who trash the town. The warning follows a spate of vandalism in which several vehicles in the Slade Road, Leaside Road and Beach Hill area of the town were damaged.Vandals kicked the wing mirrors off several cars, causing thousands of pounds worth of damage, during a late night attack on May 19.A number of youths, believed to be aged around 15 and 16 years old, were seen in the area on the night of the attack.Plain clothed officers have already been out patrolling the town in a bid to catch the culprits.Portishead police sergeant Terry Scoble said: "We had a large number of officers out on patrol in plain clothes on Friday night."We will continue to target resources at this problem and we will be operating a zero tolerance approach to antisocial behaviour of this kind."Anyone caught committing criminal damage faces serious consequences and possibly a jail sentence."Sgt Scoble said police believed those responsible for the car attacks were at McDonalds in Wyndham Way on the night of the attack. He added: "We have contacted McDonalds and have looked at the restaurant's CCTV footage and now have still pictures from which we have managed to identify those we believe to be responsible."We will not tolerate this behaviour in Portishead and will be continuing to target resources at this problem."This is not the first time yobs have vandalised parked cars in the town.Earlier this year the North Somerset Times reported how vandals caused thousands of pounds worth of damage to cars during a wrecking spree in the Slade Road area of the town.Anyone with information about the vandal attacks should contact Portishead Police Station or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
