Tesco abandons new store bid

SUPERMARKET giant Tesco has dropped its bid to open a new, smaller store in Wraxall. It is understood store bosses have withdrawn their application to build a new shop at Lodge Lane after struggling to meet all the conditions laid down in the planning agreement.Plans for the store were initially turned down by North Somerset Council following a wave of protest from residents, but Tesco appealed and won.At the same time as the Tesco application was submitted to North Somerset Council, the applicants Bickfield Associates submitted a dual outline application for residential development on the piece of land earmarked for the new store. It is now likely that new homes will replace the proposed supermarket.Nailsea councillor Andy Cole, who supported residents in their fight against the store, said: "Residential development on this site is going to be more suitable than retail development and will complement the character and ambience of the area."Despite being contacted by the North Somerset Times, no one from Tesco was available for comment.
