A SMALL toy carrot will have pride of place in a time capsule below Weston's newest public sculpture.Organisers behind the Silica, dubbed 'The Carrot' by its critics, are to sink a stainless steel pod below the structure being built at Big Lamp Corner.Among the items with a secured place in the half-metre capsule will be a plastic carrot, chosen to pay homage to the structure's rocky early history.Project coordinator for North Somerset Council, Mark Luck, said: "The Silica got called The Carrot and became a bit of a joke and insult, but it's become more of a term of endearment now."We want to capture that by putting a toy carrot in the capsule in case the memory is lost in the future."Other things which will help give a picture of the time Silica was built are things like menus from nearby restaurants which show the prices in 2006."Even things like rubbish thrown over the hoardings into the site, like a toy dog from McDonald's, could go in. What is rubbish becomes valuable pieces of social history in the future."People are being encouraged to come up with other ideas for other items to go in the capsule.Council destination manager Julia Stuckey said: "We want people to go wild with their imagination to come up with things that sum up this current time or year."People entering the competition will have their names put in a hat to bury the capsule."Plans for a Silica launch party in late August or early September are taking shape.Organisers plan to hold a light and music show with a street performance and a countdown before the structure's internal lights are turned on for the first time. For more details of the competition, which ends on September 1, call 01934 417117.
