A Weston-super-Mare school chef has placed second in a regional cooking competition.

Steve Fowell put his best foot forward in the South West School Chef Of The Year competition in a bid to retain his title.

Mr Fowell, who is a chef at Mendip Green Primary School, served up a tasty Tex-Mex cowboy pie for main and a golden sunrise pot pudding for dessert.

He placed second out of nine, losing out to Dorset chef Tracey Ford who cooked up an Italian feast for the judges.

Mr Fowell said he was ‘incredibly proud’ of how he did and said he ‘could not have lost to a better chef’.

He added: “I am really happy with it. It was really strong competition this year with a lot of really good chefs.

“I wouldn’t have done anything different and Tracey really did deserve to win and I still get to say I was School Chef Of The Year last year and runner-up this year.”
