SHOPLIFTERS are targeting stores in Winterstoke Road because they are not signed up to the police radio.Most shops in Weston town centre and Worle are on the Store Net radio system that allows managers to alert other retailers and the police to thieves.Officers say shoplifters are heading to Weston and Gallagher retail parks because the stores' head offices are not on the MRS radio system like other shops in the town.The radio only cost £7 a week and some shop managers have thought about paying the fee out of their own pocket to stop the high levels of crime.Sgt Gareth Starr said: "The hole in the radio link is causing us a lot of problems."It's not that the stores themselves don't want to do it, just it's their head offices who are objecting to it"We've seen a rise in thefts at shops in this area and during Christmas there was certainly a lot more crime than other parts of town."If we can get all the shops to sign up to the radio, then we can really deal with the problem of shoplifting.
